Why Hiring a Witchcraft Mentor Might Be the Best Investment You Make in Your Magical Practice

One of the most common critiques I hear in the witchcraft community is, "Why would I pay for a witchcraft mentor when I can learn everything online for free?" And I don't blame them as it's a fair question. After all, we're living in a time where there are thousands of books, YouTube channels, TikTok creators, podcasts, and blogs dedicated to witchcraft. Information has never been more accessible than it is today.

And that's exactly the problem. The challenge isn't finding information; the challenge is knowing which information is accurate, what actually works, and how to apply it to your own practice.

Over the years, I've worked with countless students who all had something in common. They weren't lacking motivation. They weren't lazy. They had simply reached a point where more information wasn't helping them anymore. They didn't need another book. They needed someone to teach them.

Witchcraft Has Always Been Passed Down Through Teachers

Long before there were social media influencers and online courses, magical knowledge was shared from person to person. The village cunning woman taught her apprentice. The herbalist taught the next generation how to identify medicinal plants. The folk healer demonstrated rituals instead of expecting students to figure them out alone. Even ceremonial magical traditions often required years of study under experienced practitioners before someone was considered proficient.

Books were certainly important, but books have limitations. A book can't watch you perform a ritual and tell you where you're struggling. They can't answer follow-up questions and they can't recognize when you've misunderstood a concept or point you in a different direction.

But a mentor can.

You Don't Know What You Don't Know

One of my favorite sayings is this:

"The most dangerous thing isn't ignorance—it's believing you already understand something when you've only learned part of it."

I see this often with newer practitioners. Someone watches a five-minute video explaining protection magic and walks away believing they fully understand warding. Or they'll memorize herbal correspondences but never learn why those correspondences developed historically.

Someone follows a spell recipe exactly but has no idea how to write one themselves. There's nothing wrong with learning this way at first. We all begin somewhere. But eventually, every practitioner reaches a point where copying techniques is no longer enough. Growth happens when you understand the principles behind your practice.

That's where mentorship becomes invaluable.

A Mentor Helps You Think Like a Witch

When people hear the word "teacher," they often imagine someone standing in front of a classroom delivering information. That isn't how I teach. My goal isn't simply to answer your questions. My goal is to teach you how to think critically about witchcraft.

Instead of saying, "Use rosemary because this website says so," we'll talk about why rosemary has become associated with protection, purification, remembrance, and healing across different traditions. Instead of memorizing correspondences, you'll begin recognizing patterns. you'll learn how to create your own spells.

Those skills stay with you for the rest of your life.

Personalized Guidance Changes Everything

No two witches practice exactly alike. Some students are deeply interested in folk magic. Others want to focus on tarot. Some are drawn toward ancestor work. Others are fascinated by herbalism or candle magic. A book can't adjust itself to your interest, but a good mentor will.

One of the greatest advantages of private mentorship is that every lesson is built around your goals. If you're struggling with spell construction, we'll spend time on spell construction. If tarot feels confusing, we'll slow down and work through it together.

If you've been practicing for years but feel stuck, we'll identify what's holding you back. Your magical journey shouldn't be forced into someone else's curriculum.

Learning Faster Isn't Cheating

Every skilled craft has teachers; Musicians have instructors; Artists have mentors; Chefs train under experienced cooks; Woodworkers learn from master craftsmen. No one questions those professions. Yet many people believe witchcraft should be learned entirely alone.

Personally, I've never understood that mindset. There's nothing wrong with seeking guidance. In fact, learning from someone with years of experience often helps you avoid mistakes that would otherwise take years to correct. A mentor can't do the work for you. But they can certainly help you avoid walking in circles.

Accountability Creates Growth

Let's be honest. It's easy to buy another book. However, it's much harder to actually sit down and study it. Many witches have shelves filled with wonderful resources they've never finished reading. Having regular sessions with a mentor creates accountability. You practice because someone is helping you grow. You ask questions instead of staying confused.

You continue progressing instead of putting your practice on the shelf for six months at a time.

Consistency builds confidence.

Confidence builds experience.

Experience builds wisdom.

The Goal Is Independence

This may surprise you, but I don't want students to rely on me forever.

In fact, the best compliment a mentor can receive is when a student eventually says,

"I don't think I need as much help anymore." That's success. My job isn't to create dependence; it's to help you become confident enough that you can evaluate information critically, build your own rituals, trust your intuition, and continue growing long after our lessons have ended. That's what good teachers do.

Is Mentorship Worth It?

Only you can answer that.

If you're happy learning independently, that's wonderful. Many excellent practitioners are self-taught. I'm largely self-taught. But if you've ever found yourself overwhelmed by conflicting advice, frustrated by information overload, or wishing you had someone knowledgeable to ask questions, mentorship can dramatically change your learning experience.

Sometimes the greatest investment you can make isn't another book, another deck, or another magical tool. Sometimes it's investing in yourself.

After all, every spell you ever cast, every ritual you ever perform, and every card you ever read begins with the knowledge and confidence you've cultivated along the way.

Those are things no one can ever take from you.
