How to Cleanse Your Altar Before Spellwork: A Simple Florida Water Ritual for Spiritual

One of the most frequently asked questions I got from beginner witches when I used to work at my local occult supply shop was on how to cleanse their altar and altar space before and after casting a spell. This question is still constantly asked on beginner witchcraft groups and hashtags on social media by witches that I figured I'd write one of the rituals I use weekly to cleanse and refresh my altar space.

Why You Should Cleanse Before Rituals

Before we get into the nitty gritty of it, though, I first need to explain why exactly it is that cleansing your sacred space is not just recommended, it's imperative and necessary for good outcomes. As a professional spellcaster, I can tell you that cleansing is not simply “extra fluff” added to ritual work; it serves a real energetic purpose. If you use a specific altar space to do all of your spellwork, lingering energy from that spell can influence the spell that you're about to perform and weaking your work. If you don't do spells all that often, spiritually stagnant space can carry emotional residue, stress, arguments, anxiety, intrusive energy, exhaustion, and lingering emotional heaviness from daily life. Think of it as the spiritual form of dust. Just as you would clean a sacred temple or prepare a room before welcoming honored guests, you always want to cleanse before and after a spellcasting to ensure that the space you're pouring magickal energy and intent into is spiritually clean, especially if you plan on invoking any spirits or deities.

One of the simplest and most effective methods for altar cleansing that I teach my students is the use of Florida Water paired with prayer, psalm work, or spoken affirmation. Below is how I do things but it does not need to be performed to a T the same way I do it. This is just one of the many, many ways to cleanse so feel free to modify and make it your own.

Why Florida Water Is Used in Spiritual Cleansing

Known for its fresh citrus and herbal scent, Florida Water is a cologne water that was originally created as a smell good to put in laundry water to fragrance fabrics. As a spiritual cleanser, however, its beginnings can be traced back to hoodoo workers back at the turn of the 19th century. From there, it slowly became more commonly used by all types of folk magick workers, particularly in Southern Cunning and Appalachian traditions.

Florida Water is commonly used by practitioners use it to:

• Cleanse altars and ritual tools

• Cleanse the body in bath rituals and anointing rituals

• Remove heavy or lingering energy

• Prepare for divination or spellcasting

• Spiritually refresh the home

• Strengthen energetic boundaries

• Invite clarity and spiritual focus

Unlike harsh banishing rituals, Florida Water cleansing tends to feel light, uplifting, clarifying, and balancing.

A Simple Altar Cleansing Ritual Before Spellcasting

This cleansing ritual can be performed before candle magick, love spells, prosperity work, protection rituals, tarot readings, ancestor offerings, or any form of spiritual practice.

You will need:

• Florida Water

• A small bowl or cloth

• A white candle (optional)

• Your altar or spiritual workspace

• Either a biblical psalm or your own spoken cleansing affirmation

Begin by physically tidying your altar space. Remove clutter, ashes, old petitions, leftover wax, or anything that feels energetically stale. Spiritual cleansing works best when paired with practical cleansing.

Once your space feels orderly, place a small amount of Florida Water onto your hands, cloth, or into a bowl. Gently wipe down your altar surface, ritual tools, candles, or surrounding area while focusing your mind on clearing away spiritual heaviness and unwanted energy.

As you cleanse the space, it is recommended that you speak out loud a prayer or incantation of some kind. Since I am a Cunningwoman, my practice is rooted in christainity so I choose to recite a cleansing psalm, however, you can either write your own prayer or use the non-christian incantation I have provided for you below.

A Traditional Psalm for Spiritual Cleansing

One of the most commonly used biblical passages for purification and spiritual cleansing is from Book of Psalms, specifically Psalm 51:10:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

This verse is often repeated while cleansing the altar, dressing candles, washing ritual tools, or preparing for spiritual work. Its focus is not only external cleansing, but inner spiritual alignment as well.

Some practitioners repeat the verse multiple times while moving clockwise around the altar space, allowing the words and intention to settle into the atmosphere.

Using Your Own Cleansing Affirmation

Not everyone incorporates biblical scripture into their practice, and that is perfectly acceptable. Personal spoken affirmations can be equally powerful when spoken with focus, authority, and intention.

You may say something such as:

“I cleanse this space of all heaviness, distraction, and unwanted influence. Let this altar be clear, protected, balanced, and aligned with my highest intention. Only energies in harmony with my work may remain here.”

The exact wording matters less than the conviction behind it.

Spellwork is deeply personal, and many experienced practitioners develop their own cleansing invocations over time.

Your altar is more than decoration. It is a spiritual workspace, a point of focus, and often a meeting place for spirits and deities to come and be with you during a ritual.

Cleansing it regularly with Florida Water, prayer, psalm work, or personal affirmations can help maintain spiritual clarity, emotional balance, and stronger ritual focus over time.

You do not need elaborate ceremonial tools to begin creating sacred space. Sometimes the most effective spiritual rituals are also the simplest: intentional cleansing, focused prayer, and the willingness to approach your spellwork with respect and presence.
