Love Spell Ritual for Beginners

If you've spent any amount of time around witchcraft communities, you've probably noticed that love spells are one of the most talked about—and most controversial—subjects in modern magic.

Some witches refuse to perform them under any circumstances. Others believe they are perfectly acceptable when approached responsibly. As with so many things in witchcraft, there is no universal rulebook that every practitioner follows.

Personally, I don't believe love spells are inherently unethical. Throughout history, love magic has existed in nearly every magical tradition around the world. Folk practitioners, cunning folk, rootworkers, and village witches all had their own methods of helping people attract affection, strengthen relationships, or encourage romance.

That said, I also believe in free will. Magic is not mind control. No spell can magically manufacture genuine love where absolutely no possibility exists. Instead, I view love workings as giving circumstances a gentle nudge; opening roads, encouraging attraction, and creating opportunities where feelings may already have the potential to grow. If there is absolutely nothing there, this spell isn't going to suddenly force someone into becoming your soulmate.

With that understanding, here's one of my favorite beginner-friendly love spells.

What You'll Need

• One red chime candle

• Love oil

• Dried red rose petals

• Damiana

• Vetiver

• Catnip

• A small square of paper

• A pen

• A fire-safe candle holder

What Each Ingredient Represents

Red Chime Candle

Red represents passion, romance, attraction, courage, and heartfelt desire.

Love Oil

The oil acts as the vehicle that carries your intention into the ritual while symbolically "feeding" the spell.

Red Rose

Perhaps the most recognizable herb of love magic, red roses symbolize romance, affection, beauty, and emotional openness.

Damiana

Damiana has long been associated with passion, intimacy, confidence, and igniting romantic energy.

Vetiver

Vetiver helps ground the relationship, encouraging stability and helping romantic intentions take root rather than burn brightly and disappear.

Catnip

Despite its reputation for entertaining cats, catnip has a long history in folk magic for attracting affection, drawing attention, and making someone more receptive to your presence.

Preparing Your Petition

1) Take your piece of paper. Write your own name three times vertically. Then turn the paper 90 degrees and write your target's name three times horizontally so that the names cross over one another, creating a pattern similar to a tic-tac-toe board.

2) Once you've completed the names, begin writing the phrase:

"Fall in love with me."

Write the phrase continuously in one unbroken circle around both sets of names until the names are completely enclosed within a ring of your intention.

The circle represents containment, focus, and the continuous movement of your desire toward manifestation.

Preparing the Candle

3) Dress the red chime candle with a small amount of love oil, starting from the top of the candle and dressing down, pulling in towards yourself. Only a thin coating is needed—you don't need to soak the candle. You want the love to flow towards you which is why you are dressing the candle from top to bottom.

Roll the oiled candle lightly in a blend of:

• Red rose

• Damiana

• Vetiver

• Catnip

A light coating is perfect. Too many herbs can become a fire hazard, so keep the layer thin and always burn candles safely in a fireproof holder.

Performing the Spell

1) Place your petition beneath the candle holder so the candle rests directly over the names.

2) Light the candle.

3) Now simply pray. There is no perfect script, just speak from your heart (If you would like to do an affirmation, though, it is perfectly fine to do so). You might ask that love enter your life, that your target begin to notice you in a new light, that opportunities arise for your connection to deepen, and that whatever unfolds does so for the highest good of everyone involved.

4) Continue focusing on your intention as the candle burns. If possible, allow the candle to burn completely.

5) Once finished, you may fold the petition toward yourself three times and keep it somewhere private until your desired outcome manifests. Many practitioners like to tuck it beneath their mattress, into a keepsake box, or on their altar.

A Note on Ethics

Whenever I teach love magic, I think it's important to acknowledge that this is one of those subjects where witches often disagree—and that's perfectly okay.

My own magical ethics allow for love spells, and they have for many years. I don't see attraction work as inherently manipulative or wrong. Many traditional systems of folk magic have included love workings for centuries.

That doesn't mean everyone has to agree with me.

If another practitioner chooses not to perform love spells because it conflicts with their own beliefs, I completely respect that decision.

Likewise, I ask that those who practice love magic be shown the same respect.

Different magical traditions have different ethical frameworks, and that's one of the beautiful things about witchcraft.

Finally, it's worth remembering that free will still exists.

A love spell isn't about overriding someone's mind or stripping away their ability to choose. Instead, think of it like giving the universe a gentle push in the direction you'd like it to go. If there is genuine potential for affection to grow between two people, magic can help open doors, create opportunities, and encourage those feelings to blossom.

But if there is no compatibility, no chemistry, or no possibility to begin with, no candle or herb can create a healthy, lasting relationship out of nothing.

Magic works best when it works alongside reality—not against it.
